First commemorated in 1993, the World Water Day is an international observance every 22 March that has raised awareness to the significance of water in our lives. However, increasing investments in nature-based solutions (NBS) for water woes is still below one (1) percent of total investment in water resource management infrastructure. To date, around 3.6 billion people around the world live in areas where water is scarce for at least a month. In addition, some 1.2 billion people live in flood-prone areas.
Nature-based solutions meant the management of existing natural resources such as forests, wetlands, and grasslands, as well as green infrastructure, to ensure safe and clean water while reducing water treatment costs. While there are limits and challenges to these solutions, they help achieve Sustainable Development Goal Number 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). This goal is also related with other Sustainable Development Goals.
