This year marked a historic event for the discipline of public administration in the Asian Region as the umbrella organizations of public administration in Asia held the first ever joint international conference to address the most pressing and burning issues in public administration and the bureaucracy from a global perspective.
The Asian Association for Public Administration (AAPA), the Eastern Regional Organization for Public Administration (EROPA), the Asian Group of Public Administration (AGPA) and the Indonesian Association for Public Administration (IAPA), together with the Ministry of Administrative Reform of Indonesia, National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA), and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), held the first ever 2024 Joint International Conference with the conference theme “Towards World Class Bureaucracy” held on November 5-7, 2024, at the Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
This historic event showcased seven (7) plenary sessions on leadership and innovation, digital transformation, PA research directions towards sustainable development, local government developments, and emerging issues and concerns of emerging economies. Moreover, these plenary sessions highlighted the informative knowledge sharing from the renowned experts of the field of public administration from the economies of Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Costa Rica, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and Timor Leste. The joint conference was participated by more than 1,000 participants from various countries and areas including Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belgium, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Germany, Hong Kong, SAR, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor Leste, Vietnam, and USA, among others. It also became a venue for 39 parallel sessions that hosted more than 250 research studies from prestigious institutions and universities. The parallel sessions mostly focused on digitalization, AI, machine learning, innovation, leadership, PA in VUCA world, risk and crisis management, social inclusion, gender and development, public values, ethics, and street level bureaucracy, among others.
